CHAPTER 6

MOLLIE

“You never told me what your friend Helena said when you picked up your stuff yesterday,” Adian remarked as we shared lunch at the hotel restaurant. We only had an hour break between competitions today and we both wanted to chill and not think about what they could possibly have planned for us this afternoon.

“She ditched me again!” I was still angry with my best friend. During our lunch break yesterday, I’d run down to the room we shared to grab my things and come up with some explanation on why she wouldn’t see me until Sunday evening.

“Seems I didn’t need to come up with an excuse after all because I met her at the door on her way out. She’d met another guy at breakfast and was moving to his room because, in her words, he could be the one.”

I highly doubted that a man she met at a hotel in Vegas would be her forever love. That shit only happened in romance books and movies. It was so strange because she never would be so...wild back home. Who was I to judge? I’d pretty much done the same thing, except not looking for my HEA. I was in it for the money.

The great sex is just icing on the cake.

I was happy for Helena if she was happy. If she’d given me a chance to tell her all my exciting news, I’d like to think that she’d be happy for me too. Maybe a little jealous.

Adian dipped a fry in the ranch and said, “At least you didn’t need to lie to her, but I have to wonder how good a friend is she to just leave you on your own like this.”

“She’s not usually so...indiscriminate. I don’t know what’s gotten into her. Or rather, who.” I laughed at my own sarcastic joke and stuffed a fry in my mouth. “We made plans to meet at the airport for our flight back to North Carolina on Monday morning.” I saw an ice cream pity party coming on when we got home and she never heard from him again. Who was I kidding, though? I’d be needing an entire gallon. Leaving Adian would be hard. Never seeing his handsome face again, feeling his touch, or making love in the sweetest yet dirtiest ways was going to leave me with a huge gaping hole in my chest. I’d better pick up more ice cream on our way home from the airport.

“You live in North Carolina?” Adian asked.

“I do. A small town I guarantee you’ve never heard of before.”

“Hmm, you might be right. I do have a buddy that lives on an island.” He paused. “Faire Island, I think.”

“I’ve been there. It’s beautiful and has changed so much lately. It’s the happening place to vacation now. When I was little, there wasn’t much to do there, so we always went to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. Do you know they found a sunken pirate ship off the island’s coast?”

“I do. I saw a special on TV.
